Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”
― Thomas Merton, No Man Is an Island
Watching film Oralpokkam two days back was one such occasion where I lost myself for couple of hours and I am still trying to find my self and recover myself.
It is a great movie , and naturally filled with great ingredients, Soul touching and refreshing direction by Sanal Sasidharan , down to earth and true to life acting by Prakash Barre and Meena Kandaswamy, A Festival of enchanting sounds and Sights, Tons of hard work, dedication and research the list goes on..
Renowned film maker Shyamaprasad said about Oraalppokkam -" We are Humbled" .
As a simple Art Lover I can only say" I am honoured "
by the experience which is still living with me.
In my view the central theme of the film is "Love" , of course I am still wondering about the inter dependance of Marriage, Love and sex and their independent existence...
I would say the most important contemporary message the film sends out is about Mother Earth, Environment and absolute necessity of development Being Sustainable...
The film also raises the following thoughts:
Do we really need " Super" and "Mega" Stars to produce outstanding movies? There are many Prakash Barres and Mmenas among us , It only takes a Director like Sanal Sasidharan to locate them and bring out the best in them . Is it not time to getaway from this super star culture?
Film industry is presently aimed at making money , and some loosing money in that effort of course. Star value is the decinding factor which makes or breaks a movie, Art being given only a side role . Is it not time we took a serious look at making movies , where Art and commercial success gets equal importance? Not forgetting that there were many such moves in the past and present.
Oralppokkam was produced on crowd funding resources. Should we not popularise this approach , particularly among NRI s with lots of artistic talents , living on nostalgic memories and a strong desire to get connected back home.?
UN Sustainable Development goals are currently being discussed the world over. Among many others SDG calls for reducing carbon emission, protecting natural resources like Rivers ans Seas and not disturbing the ecological balance. ..This film sends out it strong message by highlighting the disasters an ecological imbalance can cause. Should the Goverments not strongly support such movements projecting a message of world importance?
